FINAL REVIEW:

Is anyone as conflicted or mentally exhausted as I am? πŸ˜‚ Oh, my goodness! I was not expecting this whirlwind of a ride. I did read the beginning of the novel and skimmed some parts but didn’t complete it to leave some suspense and man was that a good idea! I don’t normally watch Xianxia’s so you can already imagine how much of a mess I was by the end of thisIt really feels like centuries has passed. This was a drama I initially anticipated for the plot. Bai Lu and Luo Yunxi was an added bonus. I know there have been many mixed reviews and I too am mixed about the ending. I still give this show a thumbs up after all the mess it had to go through with rules and regulations.

Putting rules aside, I must say story wise it was still messy but what made me enjoy the show was the growth of our male lead. I know that doesn’t cut it for most people but I’ve come to appreciate the journey of our ML. I know most of us got lured in with the romance and may even feel cheated but if we look at the big picture, Li Susu’s main goal was to change the Devil God and she accomplished that. From a heartless, cold, dark person who went through plenty of abuse and betrayals to a loving, caring, selfless person, Tantai Jin’s character growth has been one of the best I’ve seen in a long while. He only knew the world as a hell hole and definitely would have destroyed everyone in his path per what we saw in the beginning. Luckily, FL was able to come through and turn him around. She was able to give him that experience of what it feels like to be loved and cared for. All he needed was that 1 person yet the world failed him. Here’s where I may need to rant.

The fate of Tantai Jin was too cruel. I have no idea what the real meaning of this story is because the ending didn’t solidify anything. There’s a difference when you’re trying to deliver a theme vs the main idea. Usually, you’ll get the moral of the story being good vs. evil or something but I don’t know what’s happening here. Maybe I missed it? The main idea definitely is clearly explained but the message of this is flat out poor. He went through all that growth and in the end, for the greater good, sacrificed himself to save the world. Not because he wanted to but because he had to. There was no other way out. I mean what did he do to deserve this cruel fate?! I know it stems from his tribe but imagine having to bear a curse you had no clue about. The biggest message I took away from this is that no one can dictate who you are. It all starts with you. But even that wasn’t shown in the best way. When Tantai Jin decides to sacrifice himself to end the chaos, he ultimately decided that no matter what everyone saw him as, it didn’t matter because he knew he was doing the right thing. Which I guess would be a good lesson but it really irks me. I do agree it doesn’t matter what others think of you but did they really have to let it end like that for our man who just wanted to live a peaceful life with his loved ones? It’s an “A” for me in term of Tantai Jin’s growth storyline but a “C” for romance plot.

Which I got to say is another good plus despite the fated ending. I wasn’t annoyed by Bai Lu’s character being wishy-washy. I understand and even though she’s quite hypocritical, there were times the show allowed us to see her genuinely falling without knowing. Both of them are actually newbies in love. Their chemistry wasn’t a disappointment at all. Not a surprise. And I LOVED that! Luo Yunxi and Bai Lu brought their A game. No one out shined the other even if it was more focused on LYX’s character. You don’t see Bai Lu or Luo Yunxi but it’s Tantai Jin and Ye Xiwu. I love when actors are able to play the part and bring the characters to life. There were LOTS of angst and misunderstandings that definitely caused too much psychological and emotional damage to the brain. But without these 2 stepping into their roles, I don’t think we’d even be able to truly feel it. They gave us many heart breaking moments but plenty of sweetness to patch up our hearts. So many applauds to Luo Yunxi and Bai Lu! I wouldn’t mind damaging my heart again for you two. πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚

Secondary characters were definitely a hit or miss. I loved the Immortal Masters who I term as Immortal Papa’s. For the amount of screen time they had, I was so moved by their kindness. Papa Qu being the sweetest father to Susu and Papa Zhaoyou taking Tantai Jin in and becoming the father figure he never had. Omg! *sobs* that must have been the 2nd best thing I enjoyed about this drama. Their relationship was the best. It still pains me thinking about the 1st time Tantai Jin realized someone had his back. πŸ˜πŸ˜ Not to mention, his new name Cang Jiumin has such a beautiful meaning. I love the way it sounds. I did enjoy the character Xiao Lin a lot. However, as Gong Ye Jiwu that was a big pass! What an idiotic character. Xiao Lin was a loyal and upright person who deserved much more than Ye Bingchang. I wish we had more of our 3rd CP but they also had some really undeniable chemistry. They really should have their own drama one day!

The OSTs were great but personally it was a miss. There were too many times a song was played that didn’t quite match the scene. For a drama this big with a whopping 13 OSTs, I was looking forward to some scenes that would be super elevated by the music but it was meh. CGI and costumes on the other hand do not disappoint! You definitely knew where budget went. I don’t mind one bit! Some outfits were wacky but Devil God stayed looking like a million bucks! He was fancy AF. πŸ˜‚ There are so many outfits I loved on our leads. I can’t decide which looks I liked best. The CGI in here is next level. As I mentioned before, bad CGI can easily make me drop a drama fast! Not this one. Everything was stunning from beginning to end. It’ll be hard to not compare to this one. It’s a new standard. πŸ’―

Overall, I may sound more like I’m complaining but I don’t regret watching the show. The show itself went through a lot and we (the viewers) went through a lot. This was not what I was expecting but it definitely has taken a toll on me. It’s one of those shows I don’t know how to recommend besides saying check it out for yourself. I think it helped by reading bits of the novel but even without reading everything, I still loved it. I haven’t been this stirred by a drama in a long while. When a show can get me riled up but wanting to watch more, I know I’m in for ride. I recommend preparing tissue boxes and a pillow to punch because that’s how fast you’ll be changing emotions. πŸ˜… I was a mess from beginning till the end. This show packs a punch and takes a good while to recover. Many things could have been done better but I’m glad it still was able to capture the essence of the story. Thank you for a wonderful month of laughs, sweetness, tears, and pain Tantai Jin and Ye Xiwu. Here’s to our blood spitting couple! πŸ©ΈπŸ˜‚

ADDITIONAL NOTES

Favorite Episode/ MomentSnow Scene in Ep.7!

It holds a special place in my heart. This is one of the few times we see Tantai Jin genuinely smiling and happily together with Ye Xiwu (Li Susu). Something Tantai Jin was longing for throughout the whole drama. He just wanted to be in peace and live happily with the one he loved. And it’s just really a cute moment between them. Hehe
