TTEOTM Ep. 28 Commentary

 

It’s here! It’s FINALLY here! The most awaited yet heart breaking tower scene has come upon us. I must admit, it didn’t hit me as hard seeing it go down but the words spoken definitely hit the soul.

A blood bath indeed for today. Ya’ll this episode from beginning to end had me yelling, laughing, tearing up, all sorts of emotions. The episode starts back to open our wounds with Pian Ran and Qingyu’s heart breaking moment. Gee thanks Youku, I definitely needed a reminder. 😔 but then we see Ye Xiwu’s dad preparing to go fight alongside her elder brother who doesn’t even know how to fight. 😭 So many deaths within a short span of episodes. I just can’t.  Freaking Tantai Minglan! His character was so irrelevant up to this point and his death was anticlimactic. It was so odd. Ok maybe he wasn’t super irrelevant but they built up his army idea to only have it be him executing revenge for his assistant who we barely know. The original motive was still initiated but since she died he just changed plan and said screw it, I'm revenging your death.  I’m starting to feel like the 40-episode rule is really affecting this story.

As I mentioned, seeing the tower scene go down was a bit disappointing. There was a lot of hype leading up to it and I can understand why. It was the most pivotal point to Xiwu’s mission. In the novel, I teared up reading that part. But prior to the tower, we were able to see how torturous it was for her in prison and feel the relief and heart ache of that tower scene for both characters. She actually jumped off the tower and Tantai Jin wasn’t able to reach to her in time. However in the drama, as much as I dislike her character, having Ye Bingchang up on the tower as the other option was odd. Tantai Minglang told TTJ to choose which one of his beloveds does he want to save? Uhm… drama version of TTJ has made it clear as day that he doesn’t care about her. Even YBC knows that. So, to say she is one of his beloveds is 😬. She must also have 9 lives because of all the character’s whose died this week, she’s still alive. Dang, how much luck can she have with all her wrong doings she’s done?! I don’t mean to compare but even if they can’t show it to us exactly like the novel, I feel like there’s still a weird disconnect in drama plot but idk how to explain it.

I mean the reveal of the eye exchange had to have been the part that got me the hardest. Both in novel and drama. When he realized she had exchanged her own eye and regretted all of his actions in the novel I cried. When he realized in the drama, she did so to bear the curse such as Ming Ye and SJ’s fate, I cried. Her initial intentions may have been to keep him alive for her mission but by this point it hits different after all they’ve been through. During the exchange, I was so engaged. The background song hit all the right spots. You can sense the pain and TTJ's desperate attempt to have her stop it. But I'm so sorry guys.  As painful as it was to watch, I was sort of mood killed by the bloody teeth 😂. I get there has to be blood but this was excessive wasn't it? Maybe it's just me but it got distracting. But that's besides the point.

  On top of the exchange scene, when he scrambled to look for the bracelet. Oh goodness! Luo Yunxi has turned up the heat for acting in today’s episode. The way he instantly went into grief mode and then crazily try to fix the bracelet. My heart! This guy has the worse abandonment issues. Of the few people he truly cared for, they all left. How traumatizing. I did like that she revealed the truth to him. The explanation of demon lord and all that will occur. Even if he can’t accept it yet, I feel like it’s nice to have some closure as to why she did it. Ultimately, it would have been nicer to be told prior to this but Li Susu was right, the risk is too high. It’s unfair for TTJ to be fated with this darn evil bone. It breaks my heart to see that mortal him has to go through this and don’t understand. This stinks. 😟.

            I will be awaiting to see how Ep. 29 takes us as everyone is gone now. All we have left to see is Qingyu and Tantai Jin grieve heavily. I still am kind of freaked out by his actions with YXW’s corpse but hopefully tomorrow we’ll see if Qingyu can convince him. It’s too painful to watch.
