Title: Our Secret (#ChenZheyuan π₯°)
Episodes/ Watch Period: 24/ June 22nd – July 6th
Rating: Loved it!
Summary: A youth drama between an unruly genius, Zhou Si Yue, and a timid introverted girl, Ding Xian. The 2 start off on the wrong foot but soon develop a bond as they unintentionally are paired as desk mates and learn to understand one another. Thus becoming each others back bone as they navigate through their youth.
First Impression:
I can’t believe I did not start this earlier!! I’m
hooked in. I’ve listened to the OSTs a while back and fell in love them but
never really cared to look into the drama itself. But it’s never too late to
start anything! As I’m patiently trying to wait and hold out on watching the
currently airing drama, “Hidden Love”, with Chen Zheyuan and Zhao Lusi, I
decided to check out some clips of his other dramas and I fell deep into the
world of “Our Secret”. I know it was a huge hit when it aired but didn’t think
much of it as I was busy with other dramas at the time. It’s definitely a good
thing I’m starting now! I’ve never watched any dramas of Chen Zheyuan but
definitely have recognized his popularity soaring and I can see why.
At
this point, I have watched the first 6 episodes and he’s rubbing off on me
already. I ship, ship, ship! The way he’s acting in here as Zhou Siyue is the
best. I was worried he’d be the really cold aloof type of ML’s that are very
stoned face but nope! He’s got a charming personality but uses it for the
people who deserves the energy. So I can see where he may come off as aloof to
some but I think he’s just more sensible. He knows what's worth it and what’s
not. So hopefully he won’t disappoint me later. Xu Mengjie (Rainbow) is
adorable! I was so blown away at the thought of her being 25-26 while filming this drama.
Her looks are youthful. She easily passes as a highschooler. Just wow! She’s
the timid introverted girl but I like that she’s trying her best to break out
of her shell. Better yet, ML understands that part about her. He’s secretly
happy for her and supporting her in doing so. I’m getting so giddy thinking
about it. Hehe. I’m going to declare it now for a future reference that ML fell
for her first. Their relationship is casually growing and I’m all for it. It’s
not super slow burn but not too fast where it doesn’t make any sense. This is another fluff drama and I’m all for it. Fluff is my second nature lol!! I’m
glad I started because once I binge “Hidden Love”, I’d have already gotten use
to Chen Zheyuan and be more pumped for it. I guess you can say this is my
pre-game for “Hidden Love”. Haha.
FINAL REVIEW:
A story full of growth
that I will deeply cherish. I don’t know where to begin or what to even say. I
just know that at this point, I’m obsessed. Obsessed with Zhou Si Yue and Ding
Xian’s chemistry. Obsessed with the storyline and obsessed with the
development. I’m so glad I picked this one up while waiting for “Hidden Love”
to finish airing. I think I’ve been seriously needing some fluff drama to fill
up my void from watching so many tragic/ mentally exhausting historical costume
dramas and this one hit the spot. It filled my sweet spot to the brim. I had no
idea what to expect and it turned out for the better.
Story line wise, I
absolutely am in love with the fact that this story developed over time at such
a great pace. I can clearly see the beginning, middle, and end of the story
without any confusion or drag. Shout out to the writers! It’s rare these days
for me to watch a drama that can make me actually feel the time jump and
growth. Not to mention, the attention to detail. Whether it be parallels of the
characters, their actions or matching clothes, all small details added up to
formulate a story worth gushing over.
From a timid introverted
girl to a daring outspoken woman, FL, Ding Xian, had the best growth. Not to
say that ML, Zhou Si Yue, didn’t have his own growth but FL’s growth was more
noticeable. The story was yet another youth drama but had its own genuine
realistic moments. It may be annoying to some but personally, that’s what gave
this drama its charm. The fact that she chased after ML once she realized her
feelings but he also didn’t deny it makes it easier to digest. It just wasn’t
right timing because they were both still young and focusing on entering
University. And I believe that’s how I got hooked in. Seeing the sweet innocent
high school moments to the real-life adult issues that caused miscommunication
helped to support the character growth. They both went through tribulations
that would test the true meaning of their love which in the end was totally
worth it. The innocent fluff is what hooks you but the real adult obstacles is
what reels you in to completely invest in their story.
Zhou Si Yue let pride get
in his way of being with Ding Xian. But Ding Xian completely forgot about
herself and invested in him wholeheartedly. I understand her but really was
cheering for her to remember her self-worth. I was frustrated that she was
doing everything for him but luckily, Zhou Si Yue helped her to realize that
there’s more to the world. In turn, he almost lost his chance with Ding Xian
but I thank Kong Shadi for opening his eyes by asking the most important
question, “What would you do if Ding Xian disappeared one day?” And the chase
began for Zhou Si Yue. It was wholesome to see the both of them become better
with communication and support each other’s dreams.
Which brings me to the
point of discussing their chemistry. Its undeniable and worth shipping. If
you’re into the cute adorable type of romance, these 2 have it going strong!
Chen Zheyuan and Xu Mengjie embodied their characters to a tee! Especially Chen
Zheyuan. I was sold by the way he portrayed Zhou Si Yue. The way he was able to
express his emotions with his eyes was π.
One look at Ding Xian and we can tell he’s enamored by her. I could not get
enough of the way he looked at her as if she’s the most precious thing in the
world. And whenever he would get emotional those tears were so natural it even
had me feeling some type of way. Lol! It all felt real and genuine. All props
to Chen Zheyuan for being able to naturally bring Zhou Si Yue to life. And that voice of his, whoo! π He’s
definitely added on to my list now. Xu Mengjie definitely is not behind Chen
Zheyuan when it came to acting. She portrayed Ding Xian in such a cute manner
you can’t help but take a liking to her. Which is why I appreciated her growth
more. From timid to daring, Xu Mengjie was not stiff or awkward and was able to
play both personalities naturally. And with that kind of mix it doubles the
power of this cute story. I really adore and ship these 2 so much.
A quick honorary mention,
the supporting characters really deserve the title of supporting characters.
From the group of friends to the family members, everyone was rooting for them.
The friends helped support getting them together and the family couldn’t wait
to hear of the good news since the beginning. ππ.
I love me a special tight knit friend group dynamic and this one didn’t
disappoint.
Overall, I’m very glad I
decided to watch this one on a whim despite listening to the OSTs for over a
year. I didn’t know what drama it was for lol. It’s a special gem and embodies
youthful moments as it should. The story was the sweetest and I would
definitely recommend for anyone looking to fill their sweet spot of fluff. Zhou
Si Yue and Ding Xian will leave a deep impression on you making it hard to let
them go. I don’t wish for more because it was a satisfactory ending. Though a
rewatch factor would be a 100x yes! But most likely, I’ve already rewatched
while writing this. π I
already miss them. Hopefully I’ll be ready for “Hidden Love”. Hehe. The
wholesomeness can’t be out beat and I only hope to find more sweet dramas like
this one. Here’s to our sweet youth couple! π₯°π₯°
NOTES
Favorite Episode/Moment:
The 2nd proposal in Episode 24. Literally the sweetest most genuine moment between our leads. I mark it as my favorite because Chen Zheyuan nailed that scene with the voice cracks to sincerely show his feelings as Zhou Si Yue. And that equation analogy was banger! Had me tearing up like crazy.
* OST CORNER *
I like all of the OSTs for this drama but these 2 are the ones that have been on repeat.
The OST that I found over a year ago and fell in LOVE with. The most calming song to listen to on a rainy day. As a fan of Chen Xueran I couldn't pass on it. But my feelings have definitely changed after watching the drama. It adds more sentimental value.
2) Always, Always, Always, Like you - Li Xinyi
Such a cute song to depict the true feelings of Zhou Si Yue. It's always been Ding Xian but he almost lost it in the moment of doubt.
